We get hundreds of test and investigation results every week. All are seen by the doctor who ordered the test and a message for enquiring patients added.
If you have had a test done it is important you contact the surgery to check if any action is required as a result of the result.
For straightforward blood tests and urine specimens the results should be available after 3 days. More complicated tests are done less frequently and some are sent away to specialist laboratories. It is worth checking with whoever takes the test when the result is likely to be available.
Cervical smear results are usually available after about 6 weeks.
Results from the X ray / Diagnostic Imaging departement usually take about 10 days.
The results of these go back to the doctor who ordered the test. It is only he or she who is in a position to comment on the result and take any necessary action. We therefore ask you to contact the consultant's secretary to chase up results of tests ordered by hospital doctors. This is in accordance with a locally agreed procedure to lessen the chance of important information being overlooked.
